Band turn local music shop into recording studio

Who needs studio time? UK band Georgia Wonder turn to local Music Retailer to record their next album on the shop floor

Like many bands, Georgia Wonder were wondering how to fund their next studio album. Financing a recording without a label can be a headache for even moderately successful bands, and although the duo had done much of the their previous work at home on their first two EPs ‘Hello Stranger’ and ‘Destroy’, they felt that given the right resources they could take things much further creatively.

It wasn’t just studio time they needed, they were also short on world class instruments – guitars, basses and keyboards – that can all contribute to making a great album. But on a trip to Nevada Music to buy some strings and a guitar strap, they had an idea.

‘It dawned on us that our local music shop has everything we need to record our music’ explained Stephanie Grant, vocals. ‘If we could get the keys, we’d be half way there’.

The band emailed Nevada Music and asked if they could use the shop to record their next album and to their surprise, Mike Devereux, founder of Nevada, loved the idea and ‘Made In Nevada’ was born.

‘It’s always nice to see bands thinking out of the box – it’s a great concept and we’ve given them free reign to do anything they like in our shop for six months. We’re as excited as anyone to see what Georgia Wonder come up with.’

The band will record a video blog of the entire process that will be posted regularly on the Muzu.TV ‘Made In Nevada’ page. ‘We’re going to be a bit like a couple of kids in a candy store’ said Julian, ‘so it would be a shame if we didn’t show people what we were up to. We can take this opportunity to experiment and share the results.’

Although this is a great way for the band to get their hands on lots of nice gear, there is a downside. ‘There are now so many instruments for us to chose from we have no idea where to start!’ explained Julian.

“Made in Nevada” first Video-Blog will be posted by the end of November.

About Georgia Wonder:

Georgia Wonder are Stephanie Grant (vocals) and Julian Moore (music). After releasing their debut EP ‘Hello Stranger’ in 2008 their song ‘Girl You Never Knew’ received plaudits from Record Of The Day and Pop Justice who called it ‘one Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack appearance away from being an international hit single.’ The video for the song, recorded for less than a pound, was immediately picked up by Bliss TV who put it into heavy rotation.

Soon after the band opened for Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall on his ’08 UK tour, playing in front of 14,000 people in a week, followed by an historic election night gig later in the year at the London American Embassy alongside Glenn Tilbrook from Squeeze.

Originally picked up by legendary BBC presenter ‘whispering’ Bob Harris who played their demos for two concurrent weeks on his BBC Radio 2 show, the band have also performed live on BBC Radio Solent, BBC Southern Counties, Original FM, Express FM and many other south coast commercial radio stations.

Georgia Wonder have just released their second EP ‘Destroy’ on their own label.
